Fraudulent Communications from the “Canada Revenue Agency”

Over the last few weeks we have received emails from the “Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)” stating that our tax return has been approved. The email comes with an attachment called “”.

This is not an actual communication from the CRA, and is probably a virus or phishing scam.    The CRA does not send emails to anyone as this is against their privacy policy.

From the Canada Revenue Agency website:

The CRA does not do the following:

  • The CRA will not request personal information of any kind from a taxpayer by email.
  • The CRA will not divulge taxpayer information to another person unless formal authorization is provided by the taxpayer.
  • The CRA will not leave any personal information on an answering machine.
